ENCOUNTERS BETWEEN CULTURES - Semiotics: frontiers and translations
(Incontri di culture - La semiotica tra frontiere e traduzioni)
Ed. Patrizia Celafato, Gian Paolo Caprettini, Giulia Colaizzi

The publication
Semiotics, in all its forms (structural, generative, communicative, interpretative,
social and cognitive), interprets that fundamental human willingness to
reach out and communicate of which translation is an essential function.
If then, the vocation to translate is a basic element of the discipline,
the historical specifics of the present moment require some theoretical
and methodological reflection on the part of those involved in semiotic
research. Although the essays contained in this publication start from
differing viewpoints, they all meet the need to redefine the relationships
between languages, cultures and identity bearing in mind the constant
demands for translation, so crucial in the age of global communication.
The contributions of scholars from various cultural backgrounds concentrate
on the theory and practice of intersemiotic translation, the relationship
with anthropology, the history and politics of those areas in which cultures
come into contact, and conclude with the idea of the literary boundaries
at which languages, traditions and differing cultural genres are contaminated.
