Many years after the last works on the history and civilisation of the Etruscans, Giovannangelo Camporeale – who today is unanimously considered one of the world’s greatest authorities – presents a work which is destined to remain a point of reference for scholars, experts and co-writers of the ancient civilisation of Pre-roman Italy. The now classic work by Massimo Pallottino (Etruscology) and The Etruscan world by Luisa Banti, in fact, do not take into account the most recent and important archaeological discoveries which, closely following one another at an increasing pace, have revolutionised our knowledge of the Etruscan world. Moreover, there has been renewed vigour in interest in the Estruscans, as the success of recent large exhibitions and conventions, and the increasing numbers of visitors to museums and archaeological sites demonstrates, notwithstanding the constant increase in enrolment to courses at universities. Camporeale is able to offer an organic synthesis of Etruscan civilisation, through thorough examination, richly documented, also at a level of iconography, of the culture of single cities and their territory. The picture he gives us extends form the bronze age to the Roman era, in such a way as to insert the development of Etruscan civilisation in a sort of continuous line which presents an entire and dynamic historical process. The last two chapters are dedicated to those Etruscan cities in the ‘Po valley’ and in ‘Campania,’ which played a primary role in the cultural development of each region and in the Etruscan presence outside Etruria. Giovannangelo Camporeale is professor of Etruscology and Italic Archaeology at the University of Florence and is the president of the National institute of Etruscan and Italic studies.
