The publication

"The father is the person who reveals life’s promises to the child and helps him to develop the feeling of hope, which is confidence in time to come".

The theme of paternity, in relation to broader considerations on parenthood, is a recurring argument in the contemporary psychological debate, but which urgently requires more general attention. The contents of this book edited by Rocco Quaglia, although differing in methodological layout, focus on the argument that underlines the "value" of the father’s presence in structuring a child’s personality.
The various essays delineates the complex reality of paternity, confronting some its theoretical aspects and describing a series of real and particularly problematic situations, to bring out three central concepts. Firstly, parenthood as the focus of development; secondly, disorientation in the relations between the sexes; and thirdly, the equal importance of the father figure in the development of the child’s psychological growth. As Quaglia explains in his enlightening introduction, the conclusions remain open, but the direction indicated is one of research for a model-relationship between father and son, which is in line with new social demands, but at the same time takes into account the needs of the child, in order to face the growing difficulties within the family.
