The publication
Up until the mid-Eighties, studies of the "theory of the mind"
represented an area of research within the field of the psychology of
cognitive development. The primary interest of scholars was essentially
concerned with documenting the changes linked to conceptual development
in pre-school children. More recently, however, research has been more
strongly oriented towards analysing the original lines of investigation
and extending to other areas of developmental study.
This new book is a collection of the most outstanding international writings
and, for the first time, offers an exhaustive view of the most recent
studies into the theory of the mind as characterised by a series of new
themes. One first aspect regards the role of socio-cultural contexts in
the development of the understanding of ones own and others minds, with
consequent insights into the question of individual differences. A second
theme concerns the integration between cognitive and emotional aspects
in the appearance and development of a naive psychology in the child.
These two themes are interconnected: caring relationships with significance
for a theory of the mind are situated within contexts characterised by
precise socio-cultural dynamics which bestow great importance on the communicative
and linguistic.
