The publication

A fundamental work which fills a gap in the panorama of Italian linguistics. More than 2,300 pages and 185,000 entries in this up-to-date and wide-reaching guide that delves into the roots of the understanding and usage of words. Each entry is accompanied by a usage mark indicating the frequency and fields of use of the words (technical specialist, regional, dialect). The phonological transcriptions have been included only with exoticisms; in some cases, however, there is a transcription of Italian words that, being of foreign origin, maintain their original spelling and peculiarities linked to pronunciation (e.g. "proustiano", "shakespeariano"). All entries provide the necessary indications for correct pronunciation. Also worthy of note are the sections on derivations and compounds, which are indispensable in reconstructing the words' family trees, and the extreme precision in dating.
