Although reinforced concrete is one of the most recent construction
materials, over the last century it has developed a tradition of
its own thanks to its models and its "classics", such
as the buildings designed by Pier Luigi Nervi.
Even so, reinforced concrete is not only used in great feats of
engineering; it is now employed universally, from the largest to
the smallest construction sites.
The full potential of reinforced concrete, however, has not yet
been entirely explored. Often it is used to create stereotyped forms,
because it is believed that more original uses might entail complicated
structural calculations or even a rise in costs. The Atlante del
Cemento represents a safe guide to the use of reinforced concrete,
both in its more typical applications, and in the search for more
expressive forms. The volume contains all the necessary technical
instructions, as well as many fully illustrated examples of how
this material has been employed.
