The ninth volume of the Grande Atlante di Architettura is dedicated
to fibrocement, a material that, since the beginning of the Twentieth
Century has seen constant and on-going development. Known in Italy
under its trade name Eternit, it is now produced without the use
of asbestos and is a compound made of fibre-reinforced concrete.
It can be modelled as desired before setting and does not warp once
it has hardened. Suitable for covering both roofs and walls, it
has been employed by the most famous architects - from Le Corbusier
to Foster - and has been in the forefront in the development of
modern architecture, not only in the home but also in the construction
of industrial and sports' facilities.
The introductory part of the volume presents the various uses of
corrugated fibrocement sheeting, highlighting with illustrations
the relationship between the building and the architectural form.
The central part of the book, on the other hand, provides examples
of coverings, walls and facings in a wide number of buildings erected
in the last twenty years.
