Up until the Nineteenth Century the use of glass i building was restricted to doors and windows. Today, however, it is recognized as one of the most versatile building material, as for example in the construction of office blocks. It is now also possible to use glass as a structural material, without supporting frameworks; whilst sheet-glass has become an essential element in modern bio-climatic architecture, due to the possibility of saving considerable energy through a kind of "greenhouse effect".
Although glass is an ancient element, it represents one of the most up-to-date materials thanks to its new applications.
The Atlante del Vetro, the sixth volume in the Grande Atlante di Architettura series, deals with all aspects of the use of glass in the construction industry.
