The structural and component parts in planning are often considered
as being separate, both in the professional field, since many architects
think that structures are the competence of engineers, and in the
field of study, since it is believed that it is possible to examine
and plan structures only using the analytical methods of construction
science.
However, if architects wish to draw up a truly complete plan, even
they must be capable of at least "visualising", if not
fully calculating, the structures. For the first time, the Atlante
delle strutture presents a wide range of structural options, described
not according to the formulas of construction science, but in the
more appropriate language of archiects, i.e. in graphics. It follows
in the wake of "classic" works that have bridged the gap
between technique and composition, such as La concezione strutturale
(Structural conception) by E. Torroja or Principi statici e forme
strutturali (Static principles and structural forms) by G. Pizzetti
and A. M. Zorgno Trisciuoglio. The Atlante delle strutture, already
published and well-known in Germany, Great Britain, the United States,
Japan, Spain and other countries, is not only a valuable tool in
practical planning for professionals, but also a "friendly"
aid to students of construction science and techniques who need
to understand the subject.
This is the tenth volume of the Grande Atlante di Architettura,
and as well as fully covering the timeless fundamentals, so essential
to architects and engineers, it also provides a simplified look
at the behaviour of structural systems and illustrates the relationships
between structure and architectural form.
