Alongside the Atlante dei Tetti, which deals exclusively with slanting
roofs, there had to be an Atlante delle Terrazze, especially in
our country where the terraced roof is such a common feature thanks
to the mild climate. This guide, then, is the natural sequel to
the former, and follows the same criteria.
Whereas in Northern Europe the flat roof has evolved as a result
of modern architecture’s challenge to tradition, in Italy even the
most abstract cube-shaped buildings have their roots in a profoundly
Mediterranean style. The volume provides in-depth descriptions of
the technical and structural aspects of flat roofs, the materials
that may be used, the problems of thermal and acoustic insulation,
protection from damp and the rain which are very important in this
type of roofing.
An exhaustive description is given of terraces as floor space for
various uses.
As in all the volumes of the Grande Atlante di Architettura series,
the Atlante delle Terrazze contains numerous illustrated examples
with a wealth of detailed scale drawings, all of which can be directly
used by planners.
