Wooden constructions were once considered marginal in the Italian
architectural tradition (with the exception of a few mountain areas),
whereas today they are expanding greatly.
On the one hand, the "renaissance" of wood is supported
by the ecological interest in its warmth and naturalness, as well
as its resistance and versatility. On the other, it provides new
possibilities, already explored by great architects such as Renzo
Piano. Wood is no longer perceived as being a simple facing material,
but ever more frequently it is used for entire or large parts of
buildings (upper floors, etc.).
Whereas in northern countries the long tradition of building with
wood has provided considerable experience, also translated into
specialist manuals, in Italy technical literature on the matter
is way behind with respect to the demands of professionals.
In order to fill the gaps, the Atlante del Legno, translated from
German, supplies a wide range of technical information, enriched
with numerous examples and details.
