Today renovating and restoring buildings has assumed great importance,
with over half of the investments in the construction industry being placed
in this field. Given this development (up to 1995 the tendancy had been
to build anew) there are very few works on the market that describe this
activity in any detail.
The Trattato di Restauro Architettonico bridges the gap, treating the
subject from all viewpoints including standards and economic aspects,
and technical and artistic considerations.
The first volume comprises four sections: one is a theoretical introduction;
another examines the historical perspective; the remaining two provide
a technical analysis of buildings (from the viewpoint of materials and
structure).
"Diagnostics" are featured in the second volume, with five sections
dealing with traditional construction elements (all types are examined),
the mechanisms of decay, methods of analysing the building, how to stop
decay, essays and preliminary surveys.
The third volume moves from diagnosis to therapy. The first section concerns
provisional work, or "emergency intervention". Then there are
three sections dedicated to intervention on the original materials, the
structure, and the use of modern materials. A final section is dedicated
to the "renovation project".
The fourth volume deals with those aspects which were at one time considered
"extras", but which are treated as areas of great importance
today: assessing the cost of renovation, building site activity, and standards
(including a large collection of acts of parliament, and other documents).
The final volume also includes a section devoted to the classification
of monuments and two examples of restoration fully illustrated and covered
step by step.
The Trattato di Restauro Architettonico contains 669 full-page illustrations
in black and white, and in colour.
The original layout, with the figure references placed in the margins,
means that this publication can be used as an illustrated atlas, starting
from the images as a way of locating the relevant texts.
