The author
Giovanni Pettinato is professor of Assyriology at the La
Sapienza University, Rome, and he is famous for his work as
decipherer of the Ebla archive.
The publication
The Sumerian tables written in cuneiform script contain numerous
references to how the gods created heaven and earth, the seas, the
sky, plants and animals. Professor Pettianto has arranged this collection
of mythological material into eight sections (The gods and the cosmos:
origin and organisation; Marriages of the gods and theogonies; Ambitions
of the lesser gods; The journeys of the gods; Love and sex; Man
and his kingdom; The afterlife: the land of no return; Order and
disorder in the cosmos), which bring together the entire corpus
of known Sumerian mythology. Some of the tales that date back some
4000-4500 years have a familiar air about them, resembling those
narrated about the Creation in the Bible.
