THE DICTIONARY OF GREEK AND LATIN MYTHOLOGY
(Dizionario di Mitologia greca e latina by Anna Ferrari)
Mythology
narrates the existence of a reality, parallel to the natural world,
and inhabited by divine and fantastic creatures who sometimes show
themselves to the eyes of the poets. Mythology is the account of
such visions, which interest the whole world and constitute, as
it were, its concealed dimension. The Dizionario di Mitologia Greca
e Latina is dedicated to these "most beautiful tales"
(Plato), which are "related to the truth" (Jung). The
3,500 articles are arranged in alphabetical order, and they narrate
the gods, the heroes, the legendary characters, the places, the
great cycles, the episodes of classical mythology from the Homeric
epos to the Etruscans, from early Rome to the provinces of the Empire.
Furthermore, the volume includes the great themes and subjects common
to more than one mythological narrative: the feasts, the cults,
the rites, the plants and animals, as well as the objects with a
role in the various tales. A complete index rounds off a work in
which lovers of classical literature and art, psychologists, and
philosophers will find a fascinatingly clear and concise summary
of mythology.
