The publication

With close of 250.000 words (almost 400.000 if the collocations are included) The Grande Dizionario Italiano dell'Uso is a completely new dictionary, featuring foreign words and modern specialist teminology, while constituting a faithful record of Italy's literary tradition and cultural heritage.
One striking novelty is the coded marker, pointing the reader to particular contexts and usages.

The Authors

The Grande Dizionario Italiano dell'Uso has been compiled and edited by Tullio De Mauro in collaboration with Giulio C. Lepschy and Edoardo Sanguineti.
Tullio De Mauro (1932) professor of linguistics at Rome's University "La Sapienza", has specialized in problems of semantics, general linguistics, and the history of the Italian language. He has also analysed the influence of sociological factors on linguistic evolution. His works have been influenced by structuralism and the theories of Ferdinand de Saussure; in 1967 he edited the translation of Cours de linguistique generale. One of De Mauro's seminal works, Storia linguistica dell'Italia unita (1963), is a study of the development of the Italian language from national unification trought until the post-war period.
Giulio C. Lepschy (1935), professor of linguistics at the University of Reading in Great Britain, has concentrated on historical aspects of linguistics. Among his works: La linguistica strutturale (1966); Saggi di linguistica italiana (1978); Intorno a Saussure (1979); Mutamenti di prospettiva in linguistica (1981); Storia della linguistica (1990-1994).
Edoardo Sanguineti (1930), poet, novelist and critic, is Professor of Italian Literature. A member of Gruppo '63, Sanguineti is a key figure in contemporary Italian literature.
