THE ATLAS OF THE UNIVERSE
(Atlante dellUniverso by Piero Bianucci and Walter
Ferreri)
The publication of this Atlas comes at a particular exciting time
for Astronomy. Advances in technology and understanding are bringing
about a scientific and cultural revolution in terms of the way in
which we perceive the universe. This has been achieved by space
technology, which has enabled us to explore the solar system, and
electronic technology which, alongside traditional optical means,
allows important new information about the universe to be gathered
and processed. Further discoveries have been made thanks to interrelated
disciplines such as the science of elementary particles, astrophysics
and cosmology. The Atlas begins by examining the Earth before embarking
on a voyage of discovery to the outermost galaxies of the universe.
It charts the evolution of research, takes stock of our current
understanding of the universe, and offers a fascinating panorama
of the challenges awaiting the new millennium.
