About us
With more than two hundred years' experience behind us, we at UTET can
claim some impressive records: not only are we the oldest publishing company,
but we have constantly maintained a dominant position in terms of results.
UTET S.p.A.'s sales figures for the period from 1.4.1999 to 31.3.2000
(approximately 78.2 million euro) are slightly up on the previous financial
year. Moreover the net income was approximately 8.4 million euro, an increase
of 55 per cent on the figure for 31.3.1999.
UTET publishes around 2,500 titles and can rely on more than 10,000 authors.
Our products are divided into catalogues, each of which contains a range
of titles on various types of multimedia supports.
To begin with, General Culture. Nova,
the new Utet Encyclopaedia, heir to the four editions of Pietro Fedele's
Grande dizionario enciclopedico, is the most innovative project in the
Italian publishing world. It is the first multimedia encyclopaedia
system, with versions in print (ten volumes are already available),
on Cd-Rom, on DVD, and on-line for updates. UTET, however, also publishes
Salvatore Battaglia's Grande dizionario della lingua italiana (the last
volume will be next year). Then there are the Classici series,
ranging from philosophy to historiography, from politics to religion,
not to mention the classics of Italian, Greek and Latin literature.
Then the professional catalogues. Their main claim to distinction is the
series of works covering the law. Fifteen years
have passed since we first started to publish data banks on CD. And now,
as then, we have been first to issue hypertextual legal codes. These are
documents designed to meet the needs of the legal professionals: authors
doctrines in concise but complete form; access to all the materials that
the author deems useful in dealing with the subject (laws and sentences);
easy browsing articles, commentaries and documents cited. But the professional
catalogue also covers the fields of economics, medicine
and architecture. The publications
include works of in-depth analysis and synthesis for the professionals,
besides top quality manuals for all students of the various legal disciplines.
The way in wich the catalogue is divided into a range of areas is reflected
in the specialisation practised by the approximately 190 nationwide sales
outlets.
By adopting a system of payment by instalment, UTET gains a firsthand
understanding of its clientele, and hence the opportunity to supply products
and services in line with the customers' real needs. UTET can support
its sales-by-instalments strategy by means of an appropriate financial
structure and centralised logistics.
