LIBRARY OF PRACTICAL DENTISTRY
(Biblioteca di odontoiatria pratica)
Over the last few years, dentistry has been faced with developments in
both scientific research, and practical application. Such developments
in the various disciplines may lead to some confusion. Dentists in local
surgeries especially encounter difficulties in keeping up with scientific
progress and in implementing new findings rationally and logically to
the advantage of his or her patients.
Preventive treatment, functional diagnosis, periodontics and fillings,
implantations, gerontology, materials and dental technology are all areas
in which there has been remarkable progress in recent years.
For some time the Biblioteca di Odontoiatria pratica series has
constituted a point of reference for all those dentists who wish to remain
informed and, at the same time, mean to distinguish between real and false
developments. Bearing such needs in mind this edition of the Biblioteca
has been created with the following aims:
- to give a new position to the disciplines of dentistry;
- to illustrate practical application and provide a critical study of
both old and new;
- to provide up-to-date information concerning dental treatment as an
indispensable introduction to being able to operate well and in any speciality.
Using these aims as a starting point, it seemed logical to try to give
the dentist or the stomatologist a ready tool with all the fundamental
information necessary to his or her daily practice. The Biblioteca
also contains a wealth of illustrations (mostly photographs) which can
be rapidly consulted.
We have consciously omitted a description of fundamental principles and
a study of scientific problems considered as being too specific. However,
the basic principles and concepts of dentistry have not been ignored even
when there have been no radical developments. There is also an illustrated
description of the development of new diagnostic and treatment techniques,
which are particularly dealt with in the video, highlighting the concept
according to which dentistry is seen as a scientific discipline that emphasises
the clinical application.
